It is actually a two-step trip: using the door from Milliways lands the couple at Scarlet's place in San Fancisco, but in the same fraction of a second, she wills herself and Weyland to be somewhere else.

GreySuit falls for it: he takes the ham-fisted approach to the game, banking high, betting high, trying to bluff his way into winning.

The Devil plays coy, seeming to be increasingly interested on his abusive money-use, to keep him down the same track.

She knows Weyland can outmaneuver the man and the other players: GreySuit is just being given plenty of rope to hang himself with.

Weyland alternates between playing overly cautiously and, now and then, after watching Scarlet, overly carelessly. He wins a little, loses considerably more, but acts like he is trying very hard to hold her interest.

And The Devil continues with her game, letting Weyland pick the time to reel in the catch and leave the other players poor.

He lets it unwind for a little while longer, acting as though he is worried about possibly losing her to bigger spenders and more successful gamblers, until the moment when he is sure that GreySuit is paying more attention to Scarlet than to the game.

Then he is all in, and very much in control of the game.

And blinded by arrogance, GreySuit keeps betting high and hard. He only notices the fall when he is suddenly broke... and Weyland is controlling the table completely. His companion already vacated the premises after seeing her 'sugar daddy' lose all.

The Devil flashes the man a daring smirk, while rubbing her companion's shoulders and back.

Oh, yes.

"You're my lucky charm, dearest," he murmurs, before stealing a kiss from Scarlet, ignoring GreySuit completely.

A lucky charm that GreySuit can't even dream of having.

"Not just your lucky charm, dear..." She kisses back, slipping arms around Weyland's neck.

Greysuit just about shrivels, muttering inanely about being cheated... silly man should not complain, he is not totally broke... just penniless for the rest of his trip, and he just lost his escort too.

In Weyland's experience it's the men who have the most who get the most upset about losing anything; where men who have little understand that things can always get worse, and so they are grateful to have anything left at all.

He gives her a smile. "I'm in the mood for a drink, I think."

"A very expensive one?" The Devil kisses him, grinning, resisting the urge to straddle his lap.

That would cause a stir around the place, her dress riding up that much...

It certainly would.

But he is content to nibble at her ear instead, secure in the knowledge that they are envied.

"The most expensive one they have," he murmurs. "Tell me, do you like diamonds?"

"Oh dear... diamonds are a girl's best friends." She leans closer to whisper hotly into his ear. "After wonderful men like you. Going to get me a diamond?"

"Anything for you, my dearest," he says, closing his eyes and just enjoying her nearness. "They're bound to have a jewelry store here, are they not?"

"Most likely... they have everything you can imagine here, or know how to get it." She takes his arm, letting one of the staff take care of their earnings. "Drinks first?" The bar is a short walk away.

"Drinks, yes," he says, starting with her toward the bar.

"They've thought of everything, here. A person can be very pampered here..."

"If one can pay for it, in cash or otherwise. This is a city of sin and indulgence, of dreams, fantasies and delirium, of deception and defeat." Sh leans a bit to Weyland while they walk. "I want to show you everything this place has to offer."

"I am a most eager student," he says. "I want to see everything you want to show me."

Oh, that kind of talk gets him a lap-devil: as it is the nature of generous, heavy-spending guests, nobody makes notice of it, and they are brought their drinks quickly. "You always know what to say to make me pleased..."

"And you know just what to say to make me feel cared for," he murmurs, a little surprised--but not displeased--at having her on his lap again.

A beautiful woman, good drinks, the envy of onlookers--what's more to want?

"Because I care for you, Weyland Smith." She strokes her companion's cheek, smiling softly to him. "You are good to me."

"You deserve someone who is good to you," he says. "I see where I am, I see how I have been treated, and if I can keep the same from happening to you--at least for a little while--then I am happy to do it."

And she kisses him.

Because right now, words would betray her, and she might end saying things that would shake their relationship.

Really, words would not be good right now.

No, words would not be good.

Without words, he can convince himself that everything is normal, that everything is exactly as it appears.

He doesn't have to confront the possibility that this may all be a lie.

Oh, that is good. Because if he did, she would be exposed, and revealed, and would be under his power.

No matter what she feels for Weyland, The Devil fears little as she fears losing the last bit of self, the last bit of freedom: she fears what anyone might decide to do with the last flame of her heart.

Right now, she just clings to the smith of the gods.

And he has no objections to being clung to.

They are, after all, both young and beautiful in appearance, and have won quite a lot of money in a casino. Is that not what people are expected to do?

That and kissing, drinking and making out: some people cast glances of jealousy over the happy couple, specially when The Devil does straddle Weyland's lap, her dress riding up to the limits of decency. Of course, most of the spectators see the beautiful woman just paying her due in attentions to her rich 'sugar daddy'.

Very few notice the true feelings mixed in. "I am going to make you the most envied man in the city..."
